N1472: JUDAEA. Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem). Antoninus Pius, with Marcus Aurelius, Caesar, and Faustina II. AD 138-161. AE 16. RARE.

JUDAEA. Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem). Antoninus Pius, with Marcus Aurelius, Caesar, and Faustina II. AD 138-161. AE 16 (16 mm, 3.24 gm). Laureate head of Antoninus Pius right. (Not visible on this coin)  Rev: Bare head of Marcus Aurelius right vis à vis draped bust of Faustina II left. Cf. Meshorer, Aelia Capitolina 41. RARE. VF

The conversion of Jerusalem, the sacred Jewish city, into a Roman Colony with a temple to Jupiter Capitolinus built over the ruins of the Second Temple was the precipitating cause of the Bar Kokhba or Second Jewish Revolt (132-136 CE.) After this was repressed, a coinage was struck which projected the image of the city as thoroughly Roman. The language is Latin and the gods are drawn from the Roman pantheon. Here we see a celebration of the doubly imperial wedding of 145 between Pius’ daughter Faustina Jr. and his adopted son Marcus Aurelius. Marcus’ late father was the brother of Faustina Sr. so the bride and groom were first cousins, almost certainly a factor in the early death of most of their thirteen children. Another dynastic coin from Aelia Capitolina showed the facing heads of M Aurelius and L Verus, the future co-emperors. Provincial coins that depict the imperial family and its travels are not common.

Price comparison, a decent quality with images visible on both sides sells for $750.00.
