This set of coins are the exact coins being offered for sale.    Each of these coins are described below:

TOP ROW:

1. Cornucopias 134-104 BC minted under John Hyrcanus I, first king to rule Israel after the successful Maccabean revolt.

2. Lead Lepton 78BC minted by Alexander Jannaeus as tokens (like food stamps) given to the people to be traded for commodities to help amend relations within Israel following the civil war of 90-85 BC between the Saducees and Pharisees.

3. Lepton 103-76 BC (Widow’s Mite “lepton” as mentioned in scriptures) minted under Alexander Jannaeus

4. Prutah 103-76 BC (Often currently referred to as the Widow’s Mite but was a larger coin with similar markings to the lepton( minted under Alexander Jannaeus.

5. Prutah of Herod Archelaus 4 BC to 6 AD  This coin copies the anchor and cornucopias symbols from previously familiar Hasmonian era coins.

6. Lepton of King Herod I the Great 40 BC to 4 AD. This lepton is apparently the first coin issued by a Jewish ruler with a graven image on it. The eagle is said to represent the golden bird that King Herod placed above the entrance to the Jewish Temple.

7. Prutah of Herod Archelaus 4 BC to 6 AD  This coin has a branch of grapes on one side and a tall helmet on the reverse. Jesus’ parents, afraid to go to territories ruled by Archelaus, settled in Galilee (Matt 2:22)

SECOND ROW:

1. “30 Pieces of Silver” Silver Shekel of Tyre 95-94 BC  This and the half shekel were the only approved coins for the Temple Tax.  This would be the 30 pieces of silver paid to Judas to betray Jesus Christ.

2. “Tribute Penny” Silver Augustus Denarius.   27-14 AD Augustus was Ceasar at the time of Christ’s birth and was referenced in Luke 2:1. This coin was probably also the true “Tribute Penny” since the Tiberius denarius was not circulated in Israel and none have been found in Israel.

3. “Tribute Penny” Silver Tiberius Denarius.   14-37 AD When asked about paying taxes to Rome, Jesus asked to see a denarius.  This is the denarius with the then-current leader of Rome, Ceasar Tiberius.

4. Prutah of Pontius Pilate 29 AD, minted during the mid-final ministry year of Jesus. Pilate was the only procurator to mint coins with symbols offensive to the Jews. This coin has a libation ladle (simpulum) on the reverse, which is a fairly frequent symbol from the Roman religion of the time, the simpulum was a utensil used by the priests during their religious ceremonies

5. Prutah of Pontius Pilate “LIZ” 30 AD, minted during the year of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion under the authority of the same man, Pontius Pilate, who minted this coin. The lituus symbol on the face of the coin was the wooden staff which the augurs held in the right hand; it symbolized their authority and their pastoral vocation. It was raised toward heavens while the priests invoked the Gods and made their predictions. Legend records that Romulus used it at the time of Rome's foundation in 753 B.C.. It is interesting to note that the cross used in present times is the direct descendant of the lituus. As with the simpulum, Pilate's coinage is exceptional in that it alone displays the lituus as the sole object illustrated on the face

6. Prutah of Herod Agrippa I 41-42 AD with image of royal umbrella.   Herod was mentioned in Acts 12 as the Herod that killed James and arrested Peter.  He also accepted worship and died shortly thereafter.

THIRD ROW:

1. Prutah of Procurator Ambibulus  8-11 AD This coin with the date palm image was minted during Christ’s lifetime around the time that Christ visited the Temple at the age of 12 as recorded in Luke 2:42.

2. Prutah of Procurator Felix 52-59 AD with crossed palm branches. Felix was the procurator who kept Paul imprisoned for 2 years in Acts 24

3. Prutah of Procurator Felix 52-59 AD with crossed shields and two spears.  Felix was the procurator who kept Paul imprisoned for 2 years in Acts 24

4. Prutah of Procurator Festus 59-62 AD.  Festus was the procurator who sent Paul to Rome after Paul appealed to Ceasar in Acts 25

5. Prutah of Jewish War, year 2, 68 AD. After the Jews expelled the Romans from Israel, they minted their own currency in defiance to Roman rule.  This amphora and vine leaf were common symbols on most of the Jewish war coins, both prutahs and the silver shekels. Shown here is the bronze prutah.

6. Coin of Constantine I 324-337 AD, first Christian ruler of Rome.  He legalized Christianity and called for the Nicene Council which established the Nicene Creed. Significant Christian history coin.
