Biblical & Church History Jewish & Roman Coins

The Roman government minted a number of coins during Biblically significant times. Two coins in particular were referenced in scripture, which were the Tribute Penny and the Thirty Pieces of Silver (shekel).  Other coins, while not referenced in scripture, were minted under the rule of people who were mentioned in the Bible, such as Herod, Pilate, Felix and Festus.  Also included in this site are Jewish Revolt coins of 68ad (prior to destruction of the Temple) and coins minted by the first Christian Emperor of Rome, Constantine I.

Shekels of Tyre
“30 Pieces of Silver”
Temple Tax
The shekel and half-shekel were the only coins authorized in which to pay the “Temple Tax”.  This was also the coin found in the fish’s mouth in Matt. 17:24

Tiberius Denarius
“Tribute Penny”
14-37 AD
When asked about paying taxes to Ceasar, Jesus said “show me a denarius.” These coins are rare and usually only 2 or 3 are available on this site.  A few other denarius coins are also listed.

Pontius Pilate
“Crucifixion Coins”
14-37 AD
Pontius Pilate designed and minted 2 different style of coins, all during the time of Christs ministry and the year of and following Christs crucifixion & resurrection. CLICK HERE to view a selection of these coins.

Roman Procurator and Herodian Coins
Most of the Roman Procurators assigned to govern Israel minted their own currency, as did the different Herods.  Click here to view some of these coins available for purchase.

First Jewish Revolt Coins
68-69AD
The Jews, once obtaining independence from Rome, started minting their own currency.  These coins were a statement of freedom and an act of defiance against Rome. These coins were minted over two years, year 2 (68AD) and year 3 (69 AD).

Constantine I
“First Christian Emperor of Rome”
307-337 AD
The Emperor Constantine I was emperor of Rome from 307-337AD, his reign was perhaps one of the most crucial of all the emperors in determining the future course of western civilization.
