This coin was minted by Herod I, also known as Herod the Great during his reign from 40-4 BC. This is a half-prutah or lepton. This is the first coin minted by a Jewish ruler with a graven image of a living creature. The eagle on this coin shows the full image of the bird. (Most of the eagle coins minted were of poor quality). The reverse side if viewed carefully will reveal a war galley with oars, rams, aphlaston and sails.
